She’s sobbing when he finally picks up his phone. “Charlotte, what’s wrong? Do you need me to come over?”

“Could you?” tears fall as she rests her head on the steering wheel outside the assisted living. Cars whiz by as if nothing has happened. But it has. Charlotte’s puzzle is falling apart. Pieces that held the glue of her life, distorted as they may be, are moving. Now she flounders to find her true emotion.

“I’m on my way.” She hears him open a car door. “Just leaving the grocery store.”

She continues to cry. “Charlotte go home. Get in the tub. You’ll feel better.” Brandon’s gentle commands sit in the car. “I’m on my way,” he reassures. “I’ll use my key.”
